Base64 Encoder & Decoder: how to use it
Encode text to Base64 or decode it back, including Unicode text in languages such as Tamil. Understand what Base64 is and what it is not.
Base64 turns any data into a limited set of 64 safe characters so it can travel through systems built for plain text, such as email, JSON fields and data URLs. Developers meet it constantly: in API credentials, embedded images and tokens.
This tool encodes and decodes text in your browser. It handles Unicode correctly, so text in Tamil, Hindi, Arabic, emoji and other scripts converts and returns without damage.
How to use the Base64 Encoder & Decoder
- Paste your text or Base64 string into Input text or Base64.
- Press Encode to Base64 to convert plain text, or Decode Base64 to convert it back.
- Read the Result.
- Press Copy result to copy it, or Clear to reset.
Tips for better results
- Base64 output is about one third longer than the input. That is normal.
- If decoding fails, the string probably contains characters outside the Base64 alphabet or has been truncated. Remove spaces and line breaks and try again.
- Padding characters (=) at the end are part of the format and should be kept.
- Do not decode strings from unknown sources and then run the result as code.
Base64 is not encryption
Anyone can decode Base64 instantly, so it provides no secrecy at all. Never use it to hide passwords or personal data. It exists to make data transportable, not private.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my decoded text look broken?
The original data may not be UTF-8 text, for example an image or a file. This tool decodes text.
Can I encode a file?
This version works with text only.
Is my text sent anywhere?
No. It stays in your browser.
