Passport Photo Resizer: how to use it
Resize a photo for passport, visa and ID applications. Understand 35x45 mm and 2x2 inch sizes, DPI, fit modes and how to avoid a stretched face.
Passport, visa, exam and government portals each have their own photo rules, but they usually come down to three things: the dimensions, the file type and a maximum file size. This tool handles the dimensions and format, using common presets so you do not have to do the arithmetic.
Resizing does not make a photo compliant on its own. Background colour, head position and expression are checked by the authority. Treat this tool as a way to get the size and file type right, and always read the official instructions for your application.
How to use the Passport Photo Resizer
- Select a clear, well-lit photo with the face looking straight at the camera.
- Pick a Photo preset: 35 x 45 mm (common passport size) or 2 x 2 inches (US-style), or choose Custom and type the pixel size yourself.
- Check the DPI for presets. At 300 DPI, 35 x 45 mm becomes 413 x 531 pixels and 2 x 2 inches becomes 600 x 600 pixels.
- Choose Fit to size: Crop to fill keeps the proportions and trims the edges; Fit inside adds white borders; Stretch forces the exact size and can distort faces.
- Choose JPEG, PNG or WebP and set the quality, then press Process image.
- Review the preview and press Download result.
Tips for better results
- Start with Crop to fill. It never distorts the face and slightly favours the top of the picture so heads are less likely to be cut off.
- Take the photo against a plain, light background in even light. No tool can fix shadows across the face.
- If the portal has a size limit such as 100 KB, lower the JPEG quality a few points at a time until the file fits.
- Print shops usually want 300 DPI. Upload portals care only about pixels, so the DPI number matters only for the preset calculation.
Why 413 x 531 pixels?
Pixels equal inches multiplied by DPI. 35 mm is about 1.378 inches and 45 mm is about 1.772 inches. At 300 DPI that gives roughly 413 by 531 pixels. The Photo Dimensions Converter shows the same arithmetic for any size.
Frequently asked questions
Will this make my photo accepted?
It prepares the size and format. Acceptance depends on the authority's rules for background, framing and quality.
Is the photo uploaded?
No. Everything runs in your browser.
Why do borders appear?
You chose Fit inside, which keeps the whole picture and fills the leftover space with white. Use Crop to fill to avoid borders.
