PDF Metadata Viewer: how to use it
See the hidden details inside a PDF: title, author, producer software, creation and modification dates, page count and PDF version.
Every PDF carries information beyond its visible pages. This hidden data, called metadata, can include the document title, the author's name, the program that produced it and the dates it was created and last changed. It is useful for checking where a file came from, and a good habit before you share a document publicly.
The viewer only reads the file. It never modifies it, and nothing is uploaded.
How to use the PDF Metadata Viewer
- Select a PDF file.
- Press Inspect PDF.
- Read the results: file name, size, page count, PDF version, title, author, subject, keywords, creator, producer, creation date and modification date.
- Press Copy metadata to put the details on your clipboard.
Tips for better results
- "Creator" is the program that made the original document, such as a word processor. "Producer" is the software that converted it to PDF. They are often different.
- Dates reflect what the producing software wrote, so they may not match the date you saved the file.
- Before publishing a document, check the author and title fields. They can contain names or draft titles you did not intend to share.
- A missing field usually means the creating program did not set it. That is normal.
Password-protected files
If a PDF is encrypted, its details cannot be read and the viewer will say so instead of showing partial information. Open it in a PDF reader with the password and save an unprotected copy to inspect it.
